Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

For the Dutch speaking people: DON'T READ THE DUTCH RULEBOOK. IT'S FUCKED UP AND FUCKED UP BIG TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They forgot to translate a note that restricts you to buying only one horse each round. On top of that the second horse action gives you the possibility to play a second cowboy YOU ALREADY OWN, not to take one extra from the general supply!!!! As I only played it once with these fucked up rules, I can't rate this expansion yet. Edit 30/07/2019: played by the correct rules and then it's certainly a more then OK expansion. You don't wanna have one player win all rodeo tiles and a horse each turn as 25 VP is quite a lot!

This is a great expansion, the addition of Horses, and new buildings improve the base game. I love the Horses, but watch out, as combined with The Cowboy (15) you cannot afford to let someone dominate the horse trade. They will simply be able to score too many points. If someone wins every Rodeo, their horses will be worth 5 VP each!

Not a huge fan of the way the horses change the game -- love the wooden meeples, though. Outlaws I could take or leave. They didn't feel necessary.
