This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

A strange mix between abstract and themed gameplay. The color grid system is purely abstract, but then there's a police station with captured art connaisseurs...? Perhaps the full boardgame explains a bit better what's going on.

I have played the original on boiteajeux for quite some time but didn't get around to playing this newer distilled version until very recently. I have to say, I was quite impressed by it! Like the original, there are a lot aspects to think about when making the decision of where to place your workers and how much to spend on a space. To my eyes, it takes what 1893 does and somehow makes it more tense and tight; making the maximum bid 5$ and tying bids to specific workers makes the considerations that much more interesting. I also enjoy the fact that the cards allow for different available actions each round - even leading to some rounds that are completely lacking certain actions - making you rethink your strategy as the game progresses (unlike 1893, where every action, at least to some degree, will be available each round). I don't love the money cards though; I would keep them for the Art Nouveau area, but maybe give the players money tokens from another game, which wouldn't be too difficult to do. Otherwise, this game is great and sits right up there with its predecessor!

This game is incredibly well designed. The game plays so smooth and has a satisfying and tight economy. I just dont get excited to play it. The theme is just ok and the gameplay is good just missing something for me. I'll never turn down a game but it won't ever be my 1st choice. For what it is this game is a resounding success and deserves all the praise it has received. For me it is just missing something and I honestly can't put my finger on what that is. Perhaps it is the super dry theme, artwork and overall look of the game. A solid game but not one I'll be keeping.
