Very disappointed with this game. You can easily manage to build everything quite easily, no real challenges even we were moving quite fast.

It's a mix of floundering through a ton of card effects cycling through your hand to develop a strategic sense of direction and taking advantage of opportunistic actions that come your way as a result of other player actions. Making a cohesive choice every single turn, with no downtime to really stop and think while other players have their turns, is overwhelming in initial plays. So much so that this 7 feels more 6ish than 8ish. The game is so rich in choice though - different tech strategies, different board development strategies, different resourrce strategies, all shaped by your card draws - you sense that some decent replay will allow it to shine. The problem is overcoming that barrier to entry to get to that point.

First play, so rating is a bit hasty. However! We LOVED it, and this is why we buy new games…looking for that game that just absorbs and satisfies you so much! Pfister has hit it out of the park again! We really liked: *everyone doing each player’s second action so that you are engaged the entire time in gameplay. *action selection is basically a rondel *players control the game length by whether or not they race down the river. *production is impressive! Double layer player boards, and wooden player pieces! Cons: can be a long game, but for us, the time flew. GWT w/ Rails to the North = Boonlake > Maracaibo. *JonGetsGames play through, as the iconography looks overwhelming, but once it is explained, it’s not as hard as it looks.
