Bloodborne: The Card Game
30m - 45m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 14+
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Games where you repeat an action (or part of an action) until you decide to stop due to increased (or not) risk of losing points or your turn.
Press your Luck
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Flo, Dave and I played this on Friday as well. Dave won 49-45-44. I was in last place. This was super fun. A game right in my wheelhouse. Players play cards simultaneously to do damage to a Monster card each round. Damage the Monster, get some Blood Tokens. Monster attacks before the players attack with a few exceptions. Players can also play the Hunter's Dream. This allows them to heal back to 8HP, get an Upgrade card and bank their Blood Tokens. If you die, you lose all unbanked tokens. Upgrades generally do more damage or have other fun effects. The player interaction is high with these cards as you can steal Blood Tokens from another player, make their damage go to 0 and other nasty things. A Big Bad Boss changes the rules of the game and is the last thing you fight. Our Boss added 2 extra Blood to each Monster. This was great fun and I can't wait to give it another spin. Flo wasn't as huge of a fan as the text on the cards was a little too much. Dave enjoyed it as well, but not as much as I did. I will teach this to the other guys when they come over. High recommendation from me.

Dark theme light card game by Eric Lang (Blood Rage, Rising Sun) where players fight monsters semi-cooperatively to score points. Pros: + Artwork + Upgrade weapon and equipment cards + Risk management (fight or risk dying and loose collected blood / victory points). + Light semi-coop: cooperatively trying to defeat the monster and competitively outguessing your opponents to earn the most points or even hurting other players (timing and turn order is very important) + Set collection with trophies + Easy to teach and play + Quick playing time Neutrals: # Dark theme based on the computer game (grotesque monsters, competitive team game: there can be only one) # Some memory elements (know what cards your opponents have in hand (played cards are visible to all players) # Direct player interaction # Variety is okay (expansion improves it) # Game is better with 4 or 5 players because of the higher uncertainty. You can try to play a 3 player game with a dummy player that randomly plays a card and maybe even collects blood. Cons: - Random luck of the draw (monsters) and push your luck with exploding dice can result in swingy moments. There are some ways to mitigate it, but still the game can be quite random at times. Similar games: * Cutthroat Cavern * King of Tokyo (kind of semi-cooperative but only one player wins, different game mechanics (dice-based Yathzee), but similar playing-time, take-that, and complexity) * Knight Tales (semi-cooperative tower defense, semi-cooperative monster slaying, race game, dice-based combat, item and set collection) * Bloodborne: The Board Game (cooperative, miniatures dungeon crawler with tile movement exploration and campaign mode, longer playing time, similar upgradable deck building)

Pleasantly surprised with this one. Very interesting dynamic that's achieved, starting off with a group think scenario, changing more to press your luck and screw your friends later in the game. Will be returning to this game in the future.
