Dark theme light card game by Eric Lang (Blood Rage, Rising Sun) where players fight monsters semi-cooperatively to score points. Pros: + Artwork + Upgrade weapon and equipment cards + Risk management (fight or risk dying and loose collected blood / victory points). + Light semi-coop: cooperatively trying to defeat the monster and competitively outguessing your opponents to earn the most points or even hurting other players (timing and turn order is very important) + Set collection with trophies + Easy to teach and play + Quick playing time Neutrals: # Dark theme based on the computer game (grotesque monsters, competitive team game: there can be only one) # Some memory elements (know what cards your opponents have in hand (played cards are visible to all players) # Direct player interaction # Variety is okay (expansion improves it) # Game is better with 4 or 5 players because of the higher uncertainty. You can try to play a 3 player game with a dummy player that randomly plays a card and maybe even collects blood. Cons: - Random luck of the draw (monsters) and push your luck with exploding dice can result in swingy moments. There are some ways to mitigate it, but still the game can be quite random at times. Similar games: * Cutthroat Cavern * King of Tokyo (kind of semi-cooperative but only one player wins, different game mechanics (dice-based Yathzee), but similar playing-time, take-that, and complexity) * Knight Tales (semi-cooperative tower defense, semi-cooperative monster slaying, race game, dice-based combat, item and set collection) * Bloodborne: The Board Game (cooperative, miniatures dungeon crawler with tile movement exploration and campaign mode, longer playing time, similar upgradable deck building)

It's fine. It takes a bit of thought to make sure that you can score some blood and trophies in a round.

I am a major fan of the Bloodborne and Dark Souls video games. I enjoyed the pvp in the games but I was primarily drawn to them because I could play it WITH my friends. In this card game, I have to play against them. Not only that, but the fighting mechanics are strange with having an enemy run away if he doesn’t die in a round. It’s odd and frustrating and does not feel like I’m playing Bloodborne. I’m sure I would like it better if it weren’t based on one of my favorite games but the gameplay and poor adaptation made it a disappointing experience. I will say, I’m happy that so many other people like it, though. I’d rather not have everyone be as disappointed as I am.
