Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

Celtic
Overproduced trick taking game which has some odd rules that don't appear to make the game develop in a particularly interesting way or really anchor the theme in any meaningful way that I could perceive.

Trick-taking with a board. Some interesting components and gameplay, but it's only a little more engaging than a standard card game.
Andy Parsons
A climbing game in which the aim is to void your hand of point scoring cards (plus points are bad). There is also a board, with the position of two pieces of your colour on it contributing between -1 and +5 per space. The incentives to win a trick are to move towards a -5 scoring game end point, and to have some control over the card play. Board position can leave you with little incentive to do anything beyond keep on playing cards, which feels odd to me. The Black Hat card adds interest as the lowest cards played will win any trick it is played to. However, the rule that the player who wins a trick with the Black Hat card can pick up the cards they just won with also seems odd. It's a recipe for repeated tricks won the same way and frustration for the other players. In addition, only sets of the same value are allowed; none of Tichu's straights, full houses or consecutive pairs. Black Hat is certainly more straightforward for that, but it is likelier that a player will be stuck with weak combinations or even none. The artwork is reasonably thematic. Production quality is good. I particularly liked the little top hats.
