This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Shieldwalls, gotta love 'em! Hairy men bashing each other with axes or pointed sticks. Most ancient wargames cater for a broad spectrum of warriors form the head to toe armoured horseman to the agile slinger - this flexibility does poor service to the toe to toe grit of the shieldwall battle. Battle Ravens takes a different and minimal approach that brings the sheldwall genre alive. No fancy manoeuvring or hit and run tactics, no flanks (at least until you kill the enemies ahead of you and create one). A simple toe to toe mash up, yet one with enough subtleties to keep the pleyer in command (not just the dice), to give each army (Norse, Anglo Saxon, Welsh, Scots, Norman) a distinct character with its own specific strengths. Best of all. 10 minutes to learn the rules. About an hour to play your first game. And the push-out cardboard figures mean you won't spend 3 months painting your armies before your first game. A great game that keeps it simple and interesting. I expect plenty more fun from this one.

There is a lot more to this game than is first apparent. It's long enough for a fair bit of strategy (and tactics, too, in the individual battles). The cards add to the historic flavour without skewing the balance. A pleasant surprise.

Only one game played so far and certainly entertaining at the simple end of the scale. We have only played once, so this must be taken with a pinch of salt at present. But we did feel that the '1st Player' was very much disadvantaged. A few more plays will reveal more. Rated a '5' but with more plays required this score may well go up or down yet.
