Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

A great addition at higher player counts, but can dilute the game at lower counts - removing that cut-throat feeling of interaction.

Besides a new faction, The Leeghwater Project adds new actions to the game. Both actions are fun additions and don't add too much complexity to the game as they're quite simple in and of themselves. The upside of these new actions is that the decision space is a bit larger and there's a bit more to consider. The downside however is that there are now more worker placement spots available which makes that part of the game less tight and cutthroat. This means that the game with expansion is a bit more open and caters a bit more to players who like open decision spaces and choice. Vanilla Barrage is more tight and this will be preferred by players who like their games brutal and punishing. I'm of the latter category.

Nice addition, especially since it gives you a new player board. Edit: Upon review, the new player board might be worse than the base ones? But with bidding (how we play online) it's not really a problem. The private buildings and the external works are really interesting, diversifying your options a lot. There's going to be a ton of replayability in this!
