Bargain Quest: The Black Market Expansion
Expansion of:
Bargain Quest
45m - 45m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 8+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Awesome expansion that just increases the enjoyment of the original or subverts to feel fresh. The option for new cards is nice, but the bosses inject some chaos that changes the way you play. Same with some of the shop attendants.

I'd say get this expansions if you're gonna play Bargain Quest. It adds more interesting descisions in the upgrade phase without making the game harder or longer. Now, I don't recommend Bargain Quest itself, but if you're gonna play it, play with this expansion.

This is the big box expansion for BQ. It adds a few new things but without adding any extra complexity. Here is a little rundown of what is included: New Monsters: We used 3 new monsters (there are 9 in the box). The final big bad was the Mob Boss, who is a 6, 5 and makes you either discard 10 coins or discard 5 hearts worth of items from your shop each turn. Ouch. There is also the Unspeakable One (their nod to the Cthulhu mythos). This guy is a 9, 9 (!!!!) and if you manage to either hit him once or survive his attack, you get 3 extra VP and the game auto ends. That is cool. New item cards: The items are mostly potions. The potions give your hero a missing icon so you can equip them with more stuff. New Employee cards: There are 6 of these. The Henchmen lets you discard your Adventure card (usually a horrible card). The Loan Shark lets you add 10 coins to a hero but the hero is eliminated after the Adventure step. Thematic!! New Heroes: 8 new Heroes. These offer a wide variety of abilities. There is the Nobleman, who gets 40 Coins and can equip any items and go in any shop. But, he is a 0, 0. The Jester's Attack and Defense are equal to the # of cards equipped to him. That is neat. Black Market Deck: The main new thing is this deck. A new upgrade can be purchased that gives you access. After acquiring the upgrade, after you draw cards but before drafting, you draw a card from the Black Market deck. These cards are sometimes great (Treasure Map; if hero survives, you and Hero get 10 coins or TERRIBLE Gold Sword; -2 attack). These are drafted normally). You can upgrade your Black Market to draw 2 cards each round. This is really good. I don't feel that it adds too much more complexity to the base game. It does add more time though as you have to really carefully decide what to keep and discard each round. Recommended.
