Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.
Pattern Building
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

This was fine -- but why would I want Azul to stretch from 20 minutes into nearly an hour and a half? And it wasn't the group, because it was the same people I play Azul with, and at worst the original is only 30 minutes with them. There are better choices for a 90 minute game. Might pick up to play at home but it did not resonate with me as much as the original.

I love the original and was surprised by how much I didn't like this one. It just felt like a lot of fiddly busy work and lacked the elegance of original Azul.

So far we've only played with the "A" scoring method. Since we're not sure about strategy it can seem a little random, and I fear that once we DO figure it out then it will become a simple algorithm, but that all lies in the future...right now we're enjoying a clever, moderately light game that looks beautiful! The "glass tower" is a nice touch for organizing things during the game.
