Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

It's a co-op, so that's a plus for our family. Gorgeous artwork and components. Got it used w/the playmat in trade for Dune Imperium. (I'm pretty sure I got the best of that trade!) Not complex, but seems like a good deal of variability/ replayability w/all the player powers and variety of cards & components that change from game to game.

So, right off, I do like Atlantis Rising quite a bit, it gives a nice bit of coop challenge, and the characters do feel different and asymmetrical enough that choosing one for their special power really does come into play. The component quality, especially with the KS upgrades, is top-notch, and the game does make me feel like I'd like to try the expansions. Why not a higher grade? To some degree I feel like the game is a little long and drags a little, especially in the middle portions. And when we've managed to win, the last couple turns felt a little anticlimactic, rather than a surprised and pleased rush. It's still a great game, don't get me wrong, but I don't find myself all-itchy-palmed to pull it down as much as I thought I would.

It's maybe a bit fiddly for what it is but it's really beautiful and it's a really solid game if you take the time to learn it.
