Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Although I have only played 2 of the Phoenixborns, I don't really get where the hype for this game comes from. Choices are limited, and not much is going on. But, the artwork is good, and the mechanics are tied to the theme. So it's kind of an empty shell for me... Theme (artwork/story/...) 2/2 Gameplay (smooth play/player interaction/strategy&tactics/depth) 2.5/5 Fun factor (can you afford a smile during play?) 1.5/3

Ashes has the unfortunate distinction of being a good game that's exactly the opposite of what I tend to seek out: two-player wizard duel with a large metagame and steep learning curve. Nothing against Ashes, but two-player games like this are not for me. I'm not sure what to call them (the actual genre spans everything from deck-builders, to dudes on a map, to miniature games), but the general concept is a two-player duel game, usually with a lot of custom cards or fine-tuning that needs to be done to the deck/faction to make it playable. Other games in this vein would be Arena of the Planeswalkers or Codex. They may be fine games, but just aren't for me. For one, I value the accessibility of a game that doesn't make you build your own faction (though I recognize the richness of a game allowing you to do so). And for two, I just don't have a regular opponent for these types of games. Ashes may be a great game, but it wasn't for me.
