An exceptional design that really ticks the head to head card game itch that you may have from pokemon, magic, etc... I really love how little luck plays a part, how there are no "useless" or "boring" cards in your deck, the beautiful artwork, the variety of playstyles, the fact that you don't have to hunt down rares, that releases come out in a palatable amount per year.... theres honestly so much to love here. I've personally only played the game with three people and I can imagine people who play this on a tournament scene having a lot to sink their teeth into. But I have had a ton of fun playing just within my gaming group. But skill level is important to your enjoyment of the game so if you are playing against someone with far less experience with it than you its not going to be a fun game for either player (luck doesn't play as a big a role as with other games of this ilk).

(17 year old boy typing here..) Bought this game on my Birthday on the GameNerdz website for like $40 (saved up like 20 dollars off of buying it there) should say the game is MORE THAN BALANCED! The gameplay is really nice and strategical which I really adore and the dice side-changing mechanic "Meditate" seems wayy cool for a game like this. The game is JUST BRILLIANT can't describe it in words until you play it yourself. The game is challenging tho and is not for casual people who like to have a laid back time during a game night, there's a lot to learn even from a simple coreset such as this one. Sadly my dad doesn't like the game due to some subjective art on it (hinting at "Jessa Na Ni" spooky card vibes). I only play this game with my only 11 year old brother once every 2 weeks just to keep the interest flowing. Should say this game is WAY better than Magic the Gathering and if you disagree ..think again by looking at the rigged lands system in MTG and the smart dice meditation system in Ashes. Personally, I wish some of the art wasn't as subjective in this game so that my dad would think better of this game.

Rating: 6/10 Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn in a fairly standard take on the dueling wizard genre. As somebody who has played dozens of TCGs over the years, this game felt both familiar and comfortable. The core gameplay is similar to Magic: The Gathering where you're conjuring creatures and casting spells in order to whittle down your opponent to 0 life. However the similarities end there. Instead of playing lands or resource cards, you roll dice to gather the costs necessary to cast spells which is where the game tries to add in the variance. While this may sound offputting to some, there are enough mitigating factors to help offset the variance of the dice rolls. For example, you can discard a card to switch a die to the side you want, or there are spells you can cast that might immediately convert several dice to what you're looking for. Where magic has different types of mana, so too are there different types of dice, each giving you a special minor ability you can use on your turn. I found this to be a welcome change, adding a bit of thematic power based on the colors of the dice you choose. The artwork is gorgeous, and the dice are solid and satisfying to roll. It's always nice to play a game with good components, even if those components are second place to the cards themselves. In the end, though, I felt like the game was missing something. While the balance seemed to be there and no abilities ever really felt off, it just seemed as though the game lacked the exciting moments that are generated from other card games. I'd recommend this game if you're looking for something that is simple to get started with, or if you're looking to get your feet wet in a TCG/CCG without having to memorize hundreds of cards. PROS: + Well-Balanced Gameplay + Beautiful Artwork on Cards + Interesting take on resource generation CONS: - Decks are fairly simple and turns do not typically have those exciting rounds found in other TCGs in decisive moments. - TCG/Card Game experts may want to look at alternatives if you're looking for something with a deeper experience.
