Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management

Interesting ”engine racing” game. The card pushing element is innovative. Might be too gamey to serve as a family game.

Played the game once - and it was a preproduction pnp copy, so I cannot say anything about the production quality or the actual usability. But I liked the game a lot. It is a tableau builder with several fresh ideas. First: you buy cards from display and build them into your tableau. So they will you give you more resources, actions, etc. But only once. See, each card has several spaces one under the other, some of them contain icons. And when you need you may use the topmost icon, but when you use them you cover them by moving the card under your player board. So you have three cards in your tableau, you play an action, you use one icon from the first card to move the second card further under your player board, so another icon becomes available and you spend it with the icon from the third card to.. You get it. The second fresh idea is tokens. Basically you play Aquatica in Concordia or Century-style manner: play an action card from your hand, take it's action, then play another card, then play a card that lets you to take all the cards back into your hand, repeat. But in Aquatica you also have tokens which work like free actions or additional resources: at any time during your turn you may flip a token to take it's action in addition to your main action, and it easily becomes a puzzle in itself. Ok, I play this action to buy a card from display but by using that token I may immediately move it further under my player board so that icon will become available and so I may use it together with another card to.. You get it. And you get new tokens from your cards. This is a game that at first glance seems restrictive but then it clicks and you start doing more and more. Playtime is under an hour, even maybe about thirty minutes with two players that know the game well. Need to play more, feel like it will get a score of 8 or higher after more plays.

I like that the rulebook tries to incorporate theme, but I'm not really immersed in it; most of the time I'm looking at the symbols. Manta ray tokens are nice. Some artwork is nice, but some I have no idea what it is because the cards are too small and the art is too dark. The board artwork also depicts whales in chains or ropes. The insert fits the cold waters expansion well - like it was planned. Gameplay: you have action cards you play that either lets you do one action. Then you can do other actions based on which locations you've acquired. Resources is kind of like 7 wonders. To upgrade your actions you may lose a previous ability, but you need to in order to be able to score the cards and maybe acquire more manta rays that help in some way. New expansion: coral reef
