Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.
Variable Player Powers
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

I really enjoy the time travel mechanic. It's very thematic and creates tension via decisions you have to make. Water is life and the integration of this element to a devastated populace wraps up the theme in a tight bow. More to come.

Very pretty in its deluxe format - vast amounts of colorful and attractive bits covered most of our large dining table. Overall we enjoyed playing the game but felt it was unnecessarily complicated and had some balance issues - e.g. one evacuation reward was easier to achieve than others but granted way more VP than those that were harder to achieve. For our 3 player game it took 2 hours to set up and go through the rules. The game itself took 4 hours. When you put this much effort into a game that requires a lot of forward planning and careful strategizing it's rather disappointing that your work can be ruined by unlucky dice rolls. We felt dice didn't really belong in this game.

I think the theme in this game is very well executed. You can feel the immersion when playing. I really like the time travel mechanic. Allowing for resources/personnel to be transported back with future consequences. Get something now, but have to pay for it plus some additional costs later. Ultimately though, I think the complexity of the game is not warranted based on the depth of play. You are locked into a specific path at the start of the game based on the civilization that you choose. The buildings in particular feel very lucky in that you may grab a decent building only to have a fantastic one pop up. There's also no offsetting of building cost depending on which buildings are up, so you're paying the same for a crappy building vs an excellent one. This would be acceptable if not for the length of the game (3-4 hours). 60-120 minutes is a complete lie. Not going to pick this one up, but will play again if asked.
