Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

A little persnickity in the scoring. I warn you, read the rules twice!! Interesting tableau set collection. Could use some helper aids but second time around you will be fine.

tl;dr: run of the mill puzzle game Here's the blueprint: take a simple component (a tile, a card...) and make different groups of them that have abilities and are easily differentiated by color or icon. Make rules for how they all score in different ways based on what is near them, where they are placed. Make a simple mechanism that allows the player some control over which ones they acquire when to add a level of strategy and planning. At Spiel 2022 I encountered a large number of these types of games. They all have different themes and different mechanism, but they all use this blueprint. And some of those games are certainly worth playing. I'm just not sure how many of those I need in my personal collection. Anywhooo, this is one of those games. On your turn you grab a door card and add it to your grid. It is limited in width and height and there are a few simple placement rules. And each card type has it's ability that lets you do nifty stuff. Good planning is rewarded. It's certainly not uninteresting or bad, but I had a very strong been-there-done-that feeling. A game like [thing=110277][/thing] does give you a much more interesting experience with very similar concepts. As such, I was happy to play this and wouldn't turn it down in the future, but this is not one I will seek out. That being said: if you're looking for this type of game, you certainly could do worse then this one. Initial rating: 6.5/10 BGG scale: 6/10
