Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
This mechanic usually requires players to pick up an item or good at one location on the playing board and bring it to another location on the playing board. Initial placement of the item can be either predetermined or random. The delivery of the good usually gives the player money to do more actions with. In most cases, there is a game rule or another mechanic that determines where the item needs to go.

Played this two player and we liked it a lot. Works well as being both a casual tactical game with some flair and an introductory asymmetric wargame. The arc of the game also works well with exploring in the early part to score points, then chipping away at your opponent to maintain or take the lead. Really recommend this one.

[December 2022 - 8.9] Ahoy had been described as "Root light" but, while lighter on the rules (I can teach it in a fraction of the time) I think its gameplay complexity is right up there with Root, especially if the designers eventually add more factions. To be clear, Ahoy isn't a difficult game to play -- but I think mastering the subtle ebb and flow among the factions takes a few games to sink in. Understanding how to maximize each faction in relation to the others is critical and I really enjoy that. Just like Root, you just can't leave someone alone to do their own thing, or else, they'll just run away with the game. There's also that learning curve of something you think might be helping you, is really helping others more. While simplicity in the rules is good, I would have liked for the two smuggler factions to be a little different from one another ... I look forward to possible expansions!

This is a very fun asymmetrical game from Leder Games. Definitely a good entry point for asymmetric games like Root. I can see this moving up for me the more I play it and learn more strategy.
