Ahoy is a light, skirmish(y) game of competing agendas wrapped in a nautical, swashbuckling theme. The theme itself isn’t unique, but the way it is front loaded with no pretense is refreshing--filled with cartoonishly-realized, anthropomorphic characters and factions portraying some trope of buccaneer or seafaring mercenary or smuggler. Mechanically, the game is simple. Roll dice and assign one per turn to conduct actions. You're (generally) firing your cannons, sailing, delivering goods, or deploying units. The pirates fight over island control and attack enemy ships to hamstring them. The smugglers play set-collection/pick-up-and-deliver, and they can secretly bet on the success of the two pirate factions. Depending on how well the pirate(s) perform, smugglers can reap some point benefits at endgame. If none of that sounds novel...well, it isn’t. I could not seize a unique spark from Ahoy. Although the play was interactive enough to keep my attention, the arc was predictable, and I do not see this changing from game to game. The pirates are going to fight over newly displaced islands, spitting out area-controlling pieces in slightly different fashion, and the two smugglers are going to race for newly displaced goods to deliver. I’d say the asymmetry is present, but hardly anything to write home about. Beyond that, I have played this mishmash of area control, map exploration, skirmish, and pick-up-and-deliver a dozen or so times through in other games, often in similar fashion. Granted, Ahoy does not do anything wrong. In fact, it does almost everything right because it emulates tried and true weavings. It just doesn’t feel all that novel nor does it seem to have much legs beyond a handful of romps. I'm certain there's an audience for its evidently whimsical, nautical theme. However, if you are seeking something with longevity, I’d not rush out to buy it.

Very fun light asymmetric game! Played at 2 and 3-player count, both were enjoyable and we were keen to play another game right after. Quick to setup and does not overstay its welcome. We even tried a 2-player game with one smuggler each which was manageable and fun.

Fun little asymmetric game. It was fun as one of the two main factions but I'm not sure how much fun the third and fourth factions have. I do appreciate this level of asymmetry, as the two main factions score points in the same way. I think the game would be improved by making third and fourth factions that function more like the first and second.
