Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Cooperative deck builder with a lot of control over the deck. Players try to defend a town against hordes of demons coming from a portal. [b]Pros:[/b] + Components: life wheel, player boards, cards. + Many characters who have different start conditions and special abilities. Playing another character feels slightly different. + Plenty of bosses that change up strategy and gameplay. Each boss represents a kind of different scenario. A boss deck is randomly seeded with specific boss cards which makes the boss quite thematic. + A lot of control on manipulating your deck. + Variability: many upgrade cards, each game you play with different cards, and against a different boss. + Different difficulty levels. The game is quite hard. + Tableau building: unlock and upgrade your portals. + Set-up is quite fast, but you need some kind of organisation for all the different card decks. + Cooperation by healing, absorbing damage, or finishing enemies. + Easy to teach and play. [b]Neutrals:[/b] # Artwork is okay. # Theme is rather abstract. # Plenty of expansion content available (money sink) # Solo mode. # Being alpha leader is rather difficult because of hand cards. [b]Cons:[/b] - There are a lot of upgrade cards, but they are oftentimes only a variation of other cards. They feel quite similar. [b]Thoughts:[/b] Very good cooperative game with a lot of replayability. However, pure deck builders often do not excite me which is also the case for Aeon's End. [b]Similar games:[/b] * XenoShyft (Starship Troopers theme, coop deck builder, players can help each other with cards, more chaotic) * Marvel Legendary * Shadowrun: Crossfire (Very good solo and cooperative deck building game. The difficulty is very challenging. It has a legacy system which takes ages to level up / grinding)

I enjoyed the leveling between the missions and the way the supply and the nemesis deck change over time. However there are few real game expanding surprises between the chapters and while there are some exciting fights towards the end, the first half almost feels a bit bland (at least if you're familiar with Aeon's End). What bothers me the most is the decision to have you write on spell cards and especially the mage mats. I don't mind it for the nemesis/evolve decks, but it's a guaranteed loss of aesthetic appeal for hardly any payoff (except maybe if you really enjoy naming things) for everything else. It's the biggest reason I don't feel inclined to use those mages in post campaign games. The second one being their visual design (apart from the female monk character they look quite bland and comical at the same time and so do their poses/framing on the mats). Also the game should have provided a more sensible insert to fit all the released AE content so far or at least make better use out of the huge box.

This game is that perfect blend of hectic mission briefs, quick changes thrown thick and fast. None of this "play 4 times and then we make a minor adjustment".. try mid scenario additions and explosions and wow moments. Happy to keep playing right to the end. Great game. Thoroughly enjoying it 3 games in. Thanks for letting me join in, Indaver
