Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Variable Phase Order implies that turns may not be played the same way as before and/or after.
Variable Phase Order
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Very happy to finally own this, I specifically held out for the new version, and was rewarded to find that it also includes New Era and Winter expansions within the box. I cannot compare it to its predecessor, but I do dig the theme here slightly more than Imperial Settlers. The rules are quite similar, you're heading towards a specific point total by gathering resources, building structures into your State and there's also an element of conflict and dealing with other players. Artwork and presentation here are great, and I'd give it the edge over the IS base game, but with the Atlanteans and other expansions that one might gain the edge, and it has a theme which would be more accessible. However, when your spouse, partner or casual gamer friends head home (or to bed) for the evening, break out this version instead for those hardcore apocalyptic buddies that remain.

Great engine building and hand management game. Multi-use cards gives a lot of tactical, interesting choices (Should I build this card? Or maybe raze it to get resources to activate my other cards?). Trying to squeez as much points as you can from limited resources is really interesting. The game is also quick (end game triggers when any player reaches 25 points) and doesn't drag out. The only downside is limited player interaction. I also don't like scoring 1 point for each built location at the end of the game (I feel like sometimes it gives advantage to player who is lucky and drew a lot of cards that gives construction tokens). Nonetheless, I really enjoy playing it with my wife.
