The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Versión pequeña de Polis para llevar, pero que fracasa en el balance de ambos bandos decantando hacia el bando de los Persas la partida inevitablemente.
Andy Parsons
A clever little puzzle of a game. The Greeks face a Persian juggernaut with twice as much to spend on new units and cards (with a choice of an event or moving a force) each turn. The only Greek advantages are greater effectiveness in battle on their home ground, cheaper fleets and a vulnerable Persian supply line. Nakaguro makes a few simple elements - armies, fleets, 16 cards, and a pontoon bridge across the Hellespont - greatly exceed the sum of their parts. Those 16 cards, with both Greek and Persian events, offer a enough variability to keep the game fresh from play to play. The production quality of my Nuts! edition is good. The artwork is pleasing and functional. The rules are fine.

Smart simple game with some historical perspective. Not really a wargame but it scratches the median wars.
