A deck building game that centers around tribes of squirrels harvesting acorns in preparation for winter.
Theme: The winter is fast approaching and with the cold and snow comes a lack of food. The leaves are beginning to fall from the trees and with them the acorns. All of this means that it is time for the squirrel tribes inhabiting the forest to begin gathering food for the winter. There is just one problem! There is only one oak tree left in the forest making the much coveted acorns a source of warfare. The squirrel tribes have gathered their forces and have even resorted to hiring other forest animals to help them squirrel away as many nuts for the winter as possible. Gathering acorns is easy; protecting them from bands of raiders sent out by the other squirrel tribes is a different story. In Forest Fighters you will hire forest animals to help your tribe of squirrels gather and protect acorns while stealing acorns from your opponents. Once all of the acorns have been gathered, the game ends and the player with the most acorns wins.

I'm a huge Marvel fan, and Arkham Horror LCG is my favorite game. I was therefore REALLY excited about this one! It falls short of the AHLCG-level stuff, mainly because most of its cards are too straightforward: it's hard to feel clever about playing more "deal 2 damage" cards. That being said, I've found a lot of interesting things, specifically with the Villains in expansions packs, in the game, which means I'll keep going back to it.

This a very good game with a lot to like! From a designer lens, lots for me to learn from it. As a gamer, I find it a bit fiddly and slightly repetitive.

I do not like 'card combo' games as a general rule. Usually they favor those who spend time dwelling in the cards. I don't like feeling dumb because I haven't learned all the keywords and techniques over dozens of plays. This game is certainly of that type. It also plays quite long because each player needs to play out their entire hand and tableau of cards which can be very involved including occasional rules lookups. I would not play this with more than 3 players and they would need to be experienced gamers at that. But the rest of the game is just excellent. First, the theme is really well implemented and lovely to experience - hits me right in the nostalgia for certain. The art is great and the feeling of doing super things is really there - very fun! I do not like the heroes in the base box - three of which are to me lesser characters I did not read as a kid. I'm certain FFG will 'fix' that with add-ons galore and I would love to play with some additional teams. Over all, it's a solid want to purchase and if I can find it at a reasonable price point, I intend to jump in. Good job, FFG!
