Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

PnP. My initial impression is that this is excellent. It's thinkier and slightly better than the original.

I keep with first versión and the challenge sheets variants. Didn't like to much, the double mark in yellow dices zone or the white spaces mechanics. But yes, the new ways to get more rewards and the recover dice from plate mechanics.

The Clever system is great, and this is no exception. Very, very abstract, though, of course, so I would normally recommend games like Fleet: The Dice Game more readily, unless abstraction is a huge draw for you.
