Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Topiary is a puzzle game reliant on row and column quick math. Each turn players place a worker looking down a path in any direction of a 5x5 grid. Then, the player my remove a face down tile and replace it with one in their hand. The goal is to have the most visible plants in line of sight. In ascending order, workers can only see incrementally larger plants. A perfect path would see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 for a total of 15 points. The game is very simple to play and offers a deeper abstract-style of thought with each move. Drawing a face down tile to replace with one from you hand offers just enough randomness to keep the game flowing quickly, but also offers enough control to feel potency to your moves. The fun comes from maneuvering lines of sight to try to make multiple lines enhance each other while hurting opponent lines. In the 2-player light yet deep category, this is a good option. It is friendly to playing multiple rounds, and the math/points is easy to compile at the end of each round. There is a large amount of games that offer the same feel, though. I don't see Topiary becoming a favorite, but any who play will be pleasantly surprised at is tactical simplicity.

One of the many under rated games in my collection. Preferred at 2 but plays well at 3 and 4 even if more tactical than strategical.

Rather simple game of scoring rows and columns from placement of meeples/tiles. It’s cute and has some decent decision making. There is a luck factor with what tile is drawn. It plays quick and there’s not much to it, should fit it in fine with the family.
