Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

A worthy variant of two VERY good card games, Oh Hell and Spades. This game, thus, builds upon a very good foundation, lightening up the game up it seems with greater unpredictability in the play (with pirates, mermaids, and the skull king cards) and a 1-2-3 reveal bidding mechanic which I personally would drop in favor of the more traditional around the table bidding of Oh Hell. True, the traditional "tell us your bid" (going in clockwise order) does disadvantage the first few bidders because they have little to no information about the other players hands, but this is mitigated somewhat by the fact that the deal passes each round. On the other hand, the "1-2-3 reveal your bid"in Skull King, is that really an improvement? Not as I experienced it.

Chaotic fun and crazy effects aren't what I'm seeking in trick-taking games, but if there are 5 or 6 players around the table and people are looking for something with more energy, why not play a game of Skull King?

Played both the original "Scheming and skulking" and the updated "SkullKing" versions of the game. Both are wonderful. I really love the simplicity of the game, and all of the interactions make for a fun night of analysis-paralysis.
