Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Rollecate is a great little filler game. The box is tiny but is packed with great components. The components are really well made, especially the detailed little metal replica of the famous "Nijmegen Goffert" train that comes with the deluxe version of the game. The size of the box means you can carry it around with you to all sorts of places to play this fun little "push-your luck-game". However, the box might be tiny but the game itself has a large table presence and only requires 10 to 15 minutes to play. In this game you draw cards, place them down to lay the track for the little train to toot along on and throw dice to see if the train moves and comes to a halt or derails. During the game you collect penalties (if the train derails or if you decide to pass your turn). However there are ways for you to get rid of the penalties. Planning ahead is crucial. The game does require some luck and taking a lot of risks is punished severely which could lead to players lagging on in the game. Whoever has the least penalty points, wins the game. As said at the start, Rollecate is a fun little filler game that could easily act as a much needed break between larger games or game to bring along while on the road.

Funny little filler game with a lot of luck involved. I like it. I bought it on Spellenspektakel (games fair) from Michiel de Wit himself and played it with him and I didn't win. Almost though, one game was a close finish.

A detailed, white metal mini (included in the deluxe version) is the namesake and centerpiece of this lovingly designed, Dutch game of pressing one's luck to lay track cards ahead of a quickly advancing model train engine. The aim is to collect the fewest penalty points by avoiding derailment of the train and by ridding oneself of cards in hand. Opportunities arise, though, where it becomes advantageous to derail the train for the chance to roll dice and take penalty cards thanks to a clever twist that allows players to combine and remove matching penalty cards in one's personal discard pile, adding a bit of nuanced strategy to the game. Both the art and game play are attractive and smart; combining to create a fun, approachable filler length game with an easy pace which brings a smile as that locomotive rolls along the ever expanding track. The origin of this game involves bringing attention to the efforts to restore the actual Rollecate model train for use in the Netherlands to ride the rails once again. Future expansion cards as well as further distribution to the US are planned. Game play and components are language independent. This game was reimplemented in 2022 as Loose Caboose with minor changes and new artwork.
