In the game Reef, players take on the role of the reef itself, alternating turns in which they carefully select the colors and patterns in which to grow and expand — the more beautiful the reef, the more points they score!

UPDATE: [9.2019] Azul is my game of preference over Reef in the family-friendly abstract strategy category. [8.2018] After experiencing the popularity of Azul with my family, I am looking forward to getting this game into my collection.

Family weight abstract strategy game with pattern building and hand management. Reef is a good game for players who like to plan ahead and hold on to high scoring cards to maximize points, but also rewards those who use cards for quick scoring. A brightly colored game with good component quality, Reef is well recommended.

It's simple and very approachable to families with children. That's about it. There's little progression to the game play, aside from the increasing volume of pieces on your board. The card draw serves to up the randomness so players stay in the game for its entirety and results in little long term planning. The randomness of the card draw also means that the pace of the game is left more to the whims of the cards as opposed to the player choices. The actions you perform are basic and not all that interesting. There are plenty of games that are better out there--even for families--and Azul is clearly one of them.
