Makes game most complicated without adding depth or strategy. Some parts are OK but really dislike the alternative start.

The only good things in this expansion are the River II and the King and Robber. The City of Carcassonne starting tiles seem like a good idea on the surface but make for unpleasant gameplay. I dislike the actions inside the City of Carcassonne when playing with City tiles and the Count. It just adds to the confusion of a game that may already be complex if playing with additional expansions. Although I don't typically play with the King and Robber, I know several people who do like the added scoring opportunity for having the largest completed city (King) and largest completed road (Robber). I do play with the River II, often. The River II is by far the best version of the River. The fork is really nice and creative, expanding the typical gaming surface covered during the game. If only they included the fork in the River I included in the base game reprint. I also like the added volcano on one of the final lake tiles. This is an excellent feature for the dragon in Exp. 3 The Princess & the Dragon. I would recommend this expansion ONLY if you like the River I and would like a second River variation (River II) or if you often play with the Princess & the Dragon (Exp. 3) as River II includes a volcano tile. Edit: Forgot to mention the shrines. Enough said, they're not that memorable.

It feels like the majority of the modules in this expansion achieve very little. The large city is complicated with little gain. The Shrines are quite cool though, so I will give it that.
