Eldritch Horror: Masks of Nyarlathotep is an expansion for Eldritch Horror, a cooperative boardgame for one to eight players where intrepid investigators must traverse the globe in an attempt to thwart the cataclysmic rise of an otherworldly Ancient One. Strange cults are gathering strength in remote corners and bustling cities all over the world. Though they seem to worship different gods, the investigators have found a thread that runs throughout all of the cultists’ horrific rites.

I don't have it. I have every other Eldritch Horror expansion. And I thought I was going to purchase this one. But while it says it is a big box expansion, it doesn't seem like one. The only thing requiring a big box are the number of cards that come with the expansion. But when you have every other expansion for Eldritch Horror, already, the last thing you want to do is buy more cards (as if you didn't have enough), for a big box price. That to me is shameful. I don't like the new resource mechanic. Pick a character with better negotiating skills. Also, the resource mechanic dulls the teeth of the debt condition risk. You don't really have to ever go in debt. I don't like that. Of course I hate going into debt. But taking and avoiding risks with the means already given are what make this game great. I was looking forward to the personal stories. Never had any interest for the campaign mode. And I am disappointed with the mechanic introduced there. A successfully completed personal story makes the game easier as you receive a bonus. Failure makes the game harder. Is it even possible to win a game of Eldritch Horror when you have yet another built in mechanic working against you? So why bother to complete your game? I love Eldritch Horror, and losing can be great fun. But sometimes, (good play helps decrease the times when this can happen) an Eldritch Horror game can get away from you really badly, leaving you with no chance to win before the game is halfway done. And as much as I love Eldritch Horror, I do not like it when that happens. I don't mind losing. But I would like to have a 10% chance of pulling off a comeback as opposed to a zero percent chance. So having a personal story end in failure just doesn't sound like any fun if you have to play at a disadvantage for the rest of the game. I did like the Ancient Ones in this expansion. But I'm just not about to pay 50 bucks for two more Ancient Ones and more cards...

Really didn't need to be big box, there is a lot of air in there. Titular AO isn't as good as the fan made Masks of Nyarlathotep. I like extra cards for existing decks, but would not recommend this expansion over any others. Worst EH product so far.

A better expansion then expected, though still the 'worst' big box expansion. Masks adds the campaign option, which is really just 'play 6 games in a row'. No overarching story, just a few Prelude cards to tie everything together. It's still fun and gives the investigators a bit more personally. However I'm not sure I like the added Story cards. Some are really strong once you succeed, making a character really overpowered. Starting with an OP investigator every game kinda feels like cheating. Both new Ancient Ones are fun, so that's good. The new investigators seem quite strong, and with the added Resource mechanic makes me want to add more hard Mythos cards to balance things out. Speaking of the Resource mechanic... I'm not a fan. It's a good ability and gives players something to do rather than skipping part of their turn. But it's a bit late into the games life-cycle to add new mechanics like this. I really don't like that some events require you to have / spend a resource; the odds of those showing up is so low and it's unreasonable to prepare for that situation. So I've taken those cards out. Not the best solution but it works for me. In the end, I had to add Masks if only because it's the last expansion for Eldrich Horror. And to be honest, I would only recommend it for people who already have everything else. It's a fine expansion to top everything off, adding something new for experienced players. But for everyone starting out I would highly recommend looking elsewhere first.
